  • Perimeter volumetric protection systems LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)

The security solution proposed by Sebino Security utilizes “perception software” and LiDAR laser scanner sensors to detect and track static and dynamic objects, including people, vehicles, and animals, with very high precision. The artificial intelligence with deep-learning embedded in the perception software is the basis of real-time processing of output data generated by the LiDAR sensors; these data allow for the creation of 3D models of the monitored environment.

The LiDAR, with the perception software, is able to protect critical infrastructures and sensitive areas by recognizing intruders in real time. It creates a volumetric perimeter protection that extends throughout the space in a three-dimensional manner.

Operating through software, 3D object detection zones defined by the user are created; an intruder who violates these zones generates alerts and alarm signals allowing security personnel to quickly identify and respond to potential threats.

    The evolution of the technology

Over the years, intrusion detection systems have always evolved, such as microwave devices for barrier protection along perimeters; however, these devices provide information only about the intrusion and nothing else, necessitating the use of an indefinite number of cameras with video analysis to track the intrusion.

In this case as well, there can be problems, for example, video analysis is not precise in detection and is unable to provide information about the intruder, and also does not function as it should in low light conditions. A security system that uses LiDAR technology, on the other hand, solves these problems.

Thanks to the infrared light emitted by the device, it is possible to accurately recognize the point where the intrusion occurs, but it does not stop there: as mentioned above, these systems use artificial intelligence and deep learning, making them capable of determining whether the intruder is an animal, a human, a vehicle, or a drone, thanks to the measurements made by the LiDAR. This opens the doors to infinite possibilities; for example, an area can be defined where a maximum number of people can enter, or only vehicles can enter and not people, and their presence would trigger an alarm to the operator.

    Strengths of LiDAR systems

The strength of this system lies in the light that makes it invulnerable to electromagnetic interference, adverse weather conditions, and darkness. Furthermore, if combined with a PTZ camera (Pan-Tilt-Zoom), it is possible to constantly track the intrusion and perfectly recognize who it is and where they are moving.

    Application Fields:

    • Industrial
    • Airport
    • Data Center
    • Ports (commercial, oil, tourism, and military)
    • Power production and distribution plants (electric, gas, etc.)
    • Military sites
    • Tunnels
    • Roads of relevant importance

Various LiDAR sensors are available on the market, each with different characteristics suitable for different applications.

    • For example, in open fields, the use of 360° LiDAR is recommended, allowing for all-round surveillance and a minimum range of 120 meters from the device.
    • In closed environments, the use of all-in-one solutions is recommended, such as the Leica Geosystem BLK-247, which integrates 2 LiDAR for horizontal and vertical 360° coverage, two RGB context cameras, and four thermal cameras, for a complete solution for a high-level protection system.

Moreover, LiDAR technology systems can be perfectly integrated into an existing system, significantly reducing the number of cameras, upgrade costs, and system management, bringing it to a superior level.
